Composing & Songwriting
The reason I started playing music when I was ten years old was to express my own ideas with it. That objective has remained strong ever since. All of the training, practice time, and experiences that I’ve had since day one have been for the purpose of facilitating my core desire to create something out of nothing. My love for writing original music runs deep. The only thing that comes close to the thrill of writing an original piece of music is empowering others to experience that very thrill.
It’s a great pleasure to help people achieve their goal of creating something that they feel good about. I’ve found that most people who aspire to compose their own songs naturally come up with really great sounding material. What they are often lacking is theoretical knowledge and/or pure playing experience, which hinders their ability to expand on and react to their initial musical intuition. This leaves many people with a number of little-cool ideas that they don’t know what to do with, or where to take them next (sound familiar?). I can help you with getting unblocked by filling in all of the gaps that might be holding you back from writing the music that’s already inside you.
In addition to working on the act of creating original material by expanding the understanding of compositional options, I also will work with you to execute your own ideas with the best possible technique. Fixing technique issues on your own songs can feel amazingly liberating, and I love helping with this process.
Once a piece is complete, I’ll sometimes work with students to record it. These recordings have been everything from quick phone recordings just for listening back, to elaborate productions. Recording and listening back to your own music is a fantastic way to reflect on the sounds you are creating, which can lead to vast improvements in areas that may have otherwise been left unattended.
